Let Jade be lost. Beg the question: when will she be found? This is the central quest--not when m&c will be found, but when will Jade herself discover the rest of her life. It is her quest, but she doesn't see it yet.
Let Jade speak with kuleana, her responsibility to tell the difficult stories, to be accountable to herself (Ref. Kim Stafford's One Hundred Tricks Any Boy Can Do, p.175)
kuleana: http://www.managingwithaloha.com/19-values-of-aloha/kuleana/ Perhaps this is something she finds in her notes from her visit to Kauai.
Going back to her notes and locating this word, seeing it for what it is--suddenly in her moment of loss--may be the emotional pivot needed for the end of the book--an inevitable end.
